Spotlight : Delhi
Before December 2012
On 16 December 2012 in South Delhi, Jyoti Singh, a 23-year-old woman was beaten, gang-raped, and tortured in a bus after traveling home with a male friend. She died 13 days later. The incident generated widespread national and international coverage and yielded days of protests in response to both the incident and the response by several public officials that perpetuated blaming the victim. The victim was referred to as “Nirbhaya” by the media and in protests, meaning “fearless.”

December 16, 2012: The Day Everything Changed
In January 2018, an 8-year-old girl of the nomad Muslim Bakarwal community was abducted, raped, and murdered in Rasana village near Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir. The incident made national news when charges were filed against eight men in April 2018. The incident resulted in widespread anger across Jammu and Kashmir. It was stated that the crime was committed by right-wing Hindu extremists to intimidate the Bakarwal community into moving out of the area.
